Happy 2016! There’s something about a new year that brings a fresh start of sorts. I’m a believer in making those fresh starts positive and inspiring and want to kick off the year by sharing a message that I found really inspirational.
Those of you who know me know I’m not at all a celebrity watcher, yet my step-daughter shared a video from Jada Pinkett Smith that appeared on Facebook. I found it authentic and wise and it really resonated with me.
It’s long by social media standard - over six minutes, and I while I usually don’t watch anything over three minutes, I stuck with this through the whole thing. While the specific message is about the challenges of being a wife and mother and still making yourself a priority, the application goes well beyond that.
I’m not a mom in the traditional sense. I have two step-kids, but I didn’t live with them as they were growing up and didn’t have the challenges that go with trials and tribulations of daily life. (They are both grown with children of their own, and I must add that my grandkids are adorable!)
Wellness is about all aspects of your life, and meeting your own needs is a critical element. I talk to people all the time, and women in particular seem to struggle with this constantly. It's about making yourself a priority among any and all commitments - whether they be work, spouse, kids, siblings, parents, friends or any other relationship.
It’s interesting how our commitment and sense of giving extends even beyond those we love, to those we just feel some obligation - colleagues, neighbors, acquaintances.
As I’ve said many times and in many ways:
You can’t be your best for others until you are your best for yourself. This is one point the airlines get right – put on your own oxygen mask first, before helping others.
While I don't always take care of myself first, I’m getting soooo much better at pausing, listening to my needs and making different choices - choices that serve me and ultimately with all those that I love or interact. I hope you feel inspired to do the same.
Wishing you commitment to yourself,
P.S. You probably said you’d take better care of yourself in 2015. And 2014. And 2013… Need some help figuring out why you didn’t? Imagine how great you’ll feel in 2016 once you do take that step. Ready to make yourself a priority and commit to your needs? It can all start with a simple phone call. Let’s chat about what that path can look like – just for You.
