Imagine just for a moment “that other people are plotting your well-being, or say nice things about you behind your back.”
Those are the words of distinguished psychologist Brian Little regarding the subject of pronoia. And I think it would be AMAZING! In this valentine season, evoking love and giving, I think this is a beautiful concept to share.
According to Wikipedia, pronoia is the positive counterpart of paranoia. It is the delusion that others think well of one. Actions and the products of one's efforts are thought to be well received and praised by others. Mere acquaintances are thought to be close friends; politeness and the exchange of pleasantries are taken as expressions of deep attachment and the promise of future support.
It’s not a widely known or talked about concept. You won't find it in most dictionaries and MS Word certainly doesn’t recognize it – my screen has been full of annoying squiggly red lines, suggesting I better correct my spelling error. (Fixing that right now.)
Yet, how fabulous would this condition be? And better yet if it became epidemic? What if we all made pronoia, not a delusion at all, but actually created a reality. What if we all did plot for others’ well-being and always say nice things about them behind their back (and of course, to their face as well).
"Take a moment and breathe that in. A constant wave of feel good."
Perhaps we can start the next big movement – “trending now.” And I choose to believe it can be so. Perhaps not easily, but with mindful practice. Rob Brezney’s Freewill Astrology shares the following methodology:
PROCEDURE: Act as if the universe is a prodigious miracle created for your amusement and illumination. Assume that secret helpers are working behind the scenes to assist you in turning into the gorgeous masterpiece you were born to be. Join the conspiracy to shower all of creation with blessings.
Or simply said:
“Live life as if everything is rigged in your favor.” – Rumi
And it is! I wanted a quote just like this for this piece and it appeared! (Thanks Alison.)
